Descripción

Rodrigo Contreras-Soto es académico del Instituto de Ciencias Agroalimentarias, Animales y Ambientales de la Universidad de O’Higgins. Es biotecnólogo vegetal de la Universidad de Concepción, y realizó su Doctorado en Mejoramiento genético en la Universidad Estatal de Maringá (UEM), Brasil. Es miembro de claustro de los programas de magíster: en Ecología Aplicada (UTALCA) y Biotecnología (UOH) en donde colabora con diversos grupos de investigación. Desde sus estudios de pre y postgrado ha trabajado y colaborado en programas de mejoramiento genético de eucaliptus, grandes cultivos (maíz y soya) y hortalizas (portainjertos), vinculado al sector público y empresas privadas. El área de especialización del Dr. Contreras-Soto incluye el estudio genético-molecular de caracteres complejos (cuantitativos) para los programas de mejoramiento vegetal con énfasis en la evaluación de la interacción genotipo-ambiente y el uso de herramientas de selección genómica.

Durante su carrera ha publicado diversos artículos científicos y actúa frecuentemente como revisor y editor asociado de revistas WoS. Actualmente es miembro del Directorio del programa estratégico Regional HortiCrece y responsable del programa de mejoramiento genético de portainjertos de cucurbitáceas en Chile. En su trabajo de investigación ha liderado proyectos enfocados en el desarrollo de nuevas variedades de hortalizas mediante la caracterización y evaluación de germoplasma más adaptable a condiciones particulares de cultivo y ambientes bajo condiciones de cambio climático. Sus proyectos de investigación se complementan a través de colaboraciones internacionales, nacionales y locales.
