Su tesis doctoral, así como también su principal línea de investigación, aborda el apoyo que la opinión pública puede otorgar a los actos de violencia de manifestantes en contra la policía, en función de las restricciones impuestas por las autoridades y la cobertura de los medios de comunicación. Durante su estadía en Reino Unido, el Dr. Saavedra desarrolló una segunda línea de investigación que busca explorar el impacto que tiene el apoyo recibido de supervisores y compañeros de programa en el bienestar de los alumnos de postgrado.
