The environmental, social, and public-health related consequences of climate change are some of the most pressing issues the world is facing nowadays. In this context, during the past decade, there has been a growing interest in the development of sustainable innovations such as green technologies and low-carbon emitting products (Erzurumulu & Erzurumulu, 2013; Makower et al., 2012). Despite this, figures indicate that most consumers still prefer conventional products to sustainable ones (e.g., Cazzola et al., 2017; Vermeulen et al., 2020). Traditionally, this issue has been tackled by informing consumers about the ecological benefits of sustainable products, hoping that this would convince them to go with the sustainable options (Thøgersen, 2010, Steg, 2015). This strategy, however, is likely to fail in encouraging society-wide sustainable consumption as it assumes that most people are environmentally conscious and driven by environmental motives –and research suggests that this is not the case (Franzen & Vogl, 2013; Milfont et al., 2006). With this in mind, and building on recent work from applied evolutionary psychology (Palomo-Vélez, et al., 2021; Van Vugt et al., 2014), the current proposal outlines a different strategy; harnessing people’s self-oriented motivations and the need to be seen positively to encourage sustainable consumption. In doing so, this proposal takes a costly signaling perspective to motivate consumption of sustainable products (Miller, 2010). In particular, it is proposed that consumers would be willing to opt for sustainable alternatives over conventional ones specially when such decisions communicate context-relevant information about them to others (Palomo-Vélez, et al., 2021; Van Vugt et al., 2014). For instance, if an individual is looking for a romantic partner, buying sustainably might help as it could signal that he or she cares about others –a desirable trait in romantic partners (Farrely & King, 2019). As such, the current proposal aims to investigate (1) how sustainable consumption is perceived and whether such perception varies cross-culturally. Further, if sustainable consumption works as a costly signal, then activating evolutionary-relevant motives should trigger its display, and indeed some previous research seems to indicate so (e.g., Griskevicius et al., 2010; Tifferet, et al., 2017). However, the current proposal aims to build from this literature and asks in which contexts these motives might become relevant. In particular, the proposal aims to investigate (2) whether the visibility of the consumption behavior moderates the effect of context-relevant self-presentational needs on consumption of sustainable products, and (3) whether the expectation of future interactions with relevant observers also moderates this effect. Based on previous literature (Barclay & Barker, 2020; Berger, 2017, 2019), it is expected that (I) individuals that consume sustainable products will be perceived more positively than those who opt for conventional alternatives of such products, but this would be especially the case among relatively wealthy countries. Further, it is expected that (II) context-relevant self-presentational needs will increase consumption of sustainable products, specially when the consumption behavior is high in visibility (vs. low in visibility), and that (III) context-relevant self-presentational needs will increase consumption of sustainable products, specially when future interactions with relevant observers are likely (vs. when future interactions are unlikely). These goals and specific hyphoteses of the proposal will be tested in a series of experiments. Specifically, a cross-cultural vignette experiment will be used to test hyphotesis I, whereas hiphoteses II and III will be tested using experiments (conjoint and conventional) in the context of two evolutionary-relevant processes: achieving higher status and attracting potential mates. Results derived from the studies mentioned above are expected to contribute and advance the literature on sustainable consumption, and to inform policy-makers on how to encourage consumption of sustainable products among not only those environmentally concerned, but most people.
